Oil firm hopeful to halt offshore oil spill
Officials at Union Oil Co. said they are reasonably optimistic the spill in the Santa Barbara Channel will be stopped soon. They report oil seeping at about 1,000 gallons daily as cementing is used to seal fissures on the ocean floor. The leak began after a separate well on the platform blew out January 28, coating the Southern California coast. Brisk offshore winds pushed the slick further offshore to limit beach damage as Interior Secretary Walter J. Hickel discussed the response.

Memory lack prominent Sirhan defense tactic
Sirhan B. Sirhan tells the jury he blacked out after heavy drinking at the Ambassador Hotel and recalls nothing about bringing the gun or Kennedy's death. He says he did not realize Kennedy had been shot until hours later and denies memory of writing that Kennedy must die. The defense calls witnesses as Sirhan completed three days on the stand amid tense exchanges with prosecutor Lynn Compton.
