California brush fire explodes into vast wind driven blaze

California firefighters battled the Shasta Trinity National Forest blaze as firestorms formed from strong southerly winds. More than 40,000 acres burned, with a 20 mile line firebreak pursued as 2,000 firefighters and Air National Guard equipment fought backfires and air drops. A faulty engine on a machine sparked the outbreak near Red Bluff, while another 4,500 acre blaze near Sonora was 90 percent contained.
