UPI reports May led indicators rose for the third straight month, reinforcing belief the recession is over. Commerce Department notes eight of ten indicators rose, with several measures pointing to an upswing though some remained flat.
California lawmakers reached a breakthrough on the 11.5 billion budget after Democrats met Republican demands. The package includes a one time 120 million for schools, an 8.5 percent average pay rise for state workers, a 400 bonus for low earners, and 65.2 million for cost of living increases for elderly and disabled recipients. The plan raises Brown’s proposed amount and extends to late passage despite a delayed deadline. Three liberal Democrats condemned the accord, calling it a cop out.
United Press International reports South Vietnam will accept all refugees who wish to return. The UN says repatriation can begin within weeks with the Provisional Revolutionary Government supporting a return program. At Camp Pendleton 400 hopefuls await processing as Do Ngoc Dang cautions about reprisals.
Leon Scott Mitchell, 55, of 16 Tah Vil Dr., was arrested after a collision injuring two women in a Lompoc mobile home park. He faced felony hit run and drunken driving charges plus a concealed weapon charge after police found a .32 caliber handgun. Bail was set at 1000 dollars.
Grand opening ceremonies begin at 8 30 p m at Ryan Park for the 23rd Annual Lompoc Valley Flower Festival with fireworks signaling the start. The weekend features tennis, flower shows, horse shows, 33 food booths, a parade featuring Guy Madison, nine floats, and the Royal Cavaliers Youth Band. NASA space shuttle display, a moon fragment, and a Pioneer spacecraft replica highlight the park exhibits. The carnival offers nine rides including the octopus and scrambler, plus skydiver acts. The festival theme Good Old Golden Rule Days runs through Sunday with bands and dance groups performing.
A multi day celebration lists events at Ryon Park and surrounding venues. Thursday features teen night music and grand opening. Friday hosts contemporary and high school bands plus a dusk fireworks show. Saturday runs a parade, multiple concerts, demonstrations, dance, and open houses. Sunday includes flower shows, art shows, parades, dances, and parachute displays at Ryon Park.
President Ford says a $2 to $4 oil price increase by OPEC would be globally disruptive and unacceptable. He notes the impact would hit Western Europe, Japan, and developing nations, and urges a unified consuming nations policy and a congressional energy plan to reduce dependence on foreign oil.
