Terry Williams Tops CIF Southern Section Track Athlete of the Year

Lompoc High grad Terry Williams was named the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Athlete of the Year and near unanimously won the Ss MVP honors. He set a state two mile title time of 8 54.8 and the 3 A mile record in 4 08.4 while preparing for AAU nationals with teammate Alvin Gilmore in Florida.

Open Greens Tamed by Oversight at Oakmont U S Open

The Open at Oakmont saw slick greens temporarily softened by an unreported watering by course chief Lou Scalzo giving morning players a big edge. Paul Gary Player led with a 137 total after a 70, while Jack Nicklaus posted 140 tying Bob Charles and Tom Weiskopf at that score. Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, and Julius Boros finished even with 142 as Borek tied for 142 after a six birdie 65.

Montreal native leads La Canadienne after day one

Jocelyne Bourassa of Montreal shot a five under par 68 at the windswept Montreal Municipal Course to lead by two strokes after the opening round of the La Canadienne. Winfield Signs with Padres After World Series MVP Honor

Dave Winfield, the World Series MVP from Minnesota, signed with the San Diego Padres on Friday. The 6 foot 225 pound pitcher outfielder received a substantial bonus and was Padres' first choice in the recent free agent draft, fourth overall. Hill defeats Milburn in AAU 120 hurdles at Bakersfield

Tom Hill edged Rod Milburn in a tight finish to win the 120 high hurdles in 13.2 at the National AAU championships in Bakersfield. Milburn stumbled on the penultimate hurdle and finished fifth in 13.6, his first loss since last year’s Olympic trials.

Petty Sets Track Record at Riverside Tuborg 400 Trials

Richard Petty drove a 73 Dodge to 110.027 mph, topping his 1972 mark in the Tuborg 400 qualifiers at International Raceway. He led the first 20 to 40-car field, despite a bruised shoulder from a practice spin. Bobby Allison and Buddy Baker posted strong speeds as Ray Elder faced engine trouble.
