Zebra suspects halted seven times in San Francisco stop drive

Four Zebra slayings suspects were stopped seven times by police during a stop and search effort aimed at halting street killings in San Francisco. Grand jury testimony centered on informer Anthony C. Harris who described a van with a kidnapped white couple. one occupant later killed. Civil rights groups and Assembly Speaker Bob Moretti criticized the tactic. Patrolman Bruce F. Marovich said he questioned blacks in the van but found no fault and released them.

Feds target Tong gambling in San Francisco Chinatown

Federal agents plan a major crackdown on gambling operations allegedly run by five local tongs in San Francisco Chinatown. The probe, led by Thomas Kotoske, targets bookmaking and betting rings operating in narrow alleys, with indictments already naming fifteen Chinatown gambling figures and possible future charges against area police officers.

Nurses Strike Stalemate Persists In California Hospitals

About 4,000 California Nurses Association members walked out at 40 Northern California hospitals last Friday. Talks with hospital representatives Tuesday failed to produce progress though the State Conciliation Service called the meeting encouraging. The dispute centers on patient welfare, nurse training, workloads, and pay demands, with a new $60 monthly raise from hospitals but opposition to a further 5 6 percent increase. Meanwhile the American Nurses Association urged support from its convention attendees.

Amtrak weighs Las Vegas weekend route proposal

Amtrak president Roger Lewis called a Los Angeles to Las Vegas to Ogden Utah weekend run “quite attractive” and said the route could be studied if an alternate experimental proposal fails. Senator Howard Cannon urged the line be designated Amtrak's annual experimental run as DOT weighs several options.
