Marichal Near End of Pitching Career with Back Surgery

Juan Marichal may need a second disc operation for a back problem that could sideline him for the season. The 35 year old ace, a winner with Bob Gibson and 240-141 lifetime, told the Red Sox by telephone that his doctor wants a myelogram to assess the issue. The club has not heard back from him.

Namath sues camp critic over remarks on summer camp

Joe Namath files a $1 million defamation suit in Massachusetts Superior Court against Eddie Andelman and broadcaster RKO General Corp over a June 26 1973 WNAC Boston commentary criticizing Namath camp operations. The 16 page eight count suit claims malice and false statements implying Namath cares little for camp quality and welfare. Namath plans to teach at Nichols College camp starting June 23 while denying the charges.

Former Jets player Johnny Sample gets three-year sentence

Johnny Sample, former New York Jets running back, was sentenced to three years in prison by U S District Court Judge Daniel H Huyett III for violating his 1973 probation tied to cashing stolen government checks.
