International letter writing saga ends with authors first meeting

An intercontinental correspondence that began in 1943 between Lu Schriver of Lompoc and Pamela Wilson of Sheffield England culminated in a face to face meeting at Santa Barbara Airport The pair first connected as teenagers during World War II and shared personal news photos and life stories over decades Wilsons 10 year old daughter Catherine joined the visit and both families note the budding exchanges between their daughters The women reflected on wartime shortages American and English solidarity and the enduring bond formed through letters and shared interests such as gardening reading and sewing

Council approves mid block median plan for North H Street

Lompoe City Council votes 4 to 1 to retain street parking and install eight by 240 foot median dividers on H Street from Walnut to Chestnut with widening to 76 feet in sections Ocean to Walnut and Walnut to Chestnut. Plan includes striped turning lanes, parkways, and later pavement work funded with city and state support. Lompoc City Receives 90000 State Grant for College Park

The Lompoc Parks and Recreation Department announced a $90,000 state grant for developing College Park behind the Lompoc Shopping Center. Funds will cover turfing, pathways and walkways as part of Roberts Z'berg Open Space and Recreation program aid. A private racquetball facility is planned and skateboard facility possibilities exist. No further details on Public Works Jobs grant targets or final award timing were provided.

Board raises bed tax ante in 1977 78 budget plan

Santa Ynez Valley and South Coast groups pressed for a larger county bed tax share to lure tourists. The Board of Supervisors boosted local contracting agencies’ cut from 24 percent to 46 percent, with a countywide program to be agreed before spending. Agencies include Santa Ynez Valley Advertising Council Montecito All-Year Assn Goleta Chamber Lompoc Valley Chamber Santa Maria Chamber and Los Alamos Coordinating Council.

House panel narrowly backs Carter energy tax credit proposal
