Natural gas shortfall could raise air pollution
Bruce C. Netschert of National Economic Research Associates warns a 10 percent gas shortfall could lift air pollution as more oil and coal burn to replace lost gas. He cites New York as a sample, noting 35 billion cubic feet yearly shortfall and 300 million gallons of oil needed to substitute, with over 50 million pounds of additional pollutants annually.

Coal plants may alter weather via airborne aerosols
Federal scientist Dr Rudolf Pueschel of NOAA says fly ash aerosols from coal plants could modify rainfall downwind. Studies at Four Corners plant show aerosols coated with oxidized chlorides may seed clouds, producing more, smaller droplets and potentially acid rain with prolonged exposure.

Aerosol Study Probes Health Risks From Pollutant Particles
Pueschel reports that aerosols from the Four Comers area may pose a health hazard in extreme cases as very small particles can be inhaled. Tests found chlorides sulfates and traces of aluminum zirconium and mercury, with further research planned on emission controls and cleaner industrial devices.
