Board cuts 18 sheriff positions amid budget squeeze
The County Board of Supervisors voted 3 to 2 to delete 18 deputy sheriff posts from Sheriff Coroner John W. Carpenter and county detention facility budgets. The move saves an estimated 212,500 dollars for 1974 75, based on Administrative Officer Raymond D. Johnson's plan to pare costs and adjust patrol levels on need rather than population. Sheriff Carpenter condemned the action and warned it could reduce serious crime deterrence as patrols drop from 68 to 51 on the South Coast.
