Twins' Dutch treat delivers first major league start

Bert Blyleven a 19 year old Dutch born pitcher recalled from Evansville to replace injured Luis Tiant made his major league debut with Minnesota. He pitched seven innings allowing one run on a first pitch homer by Lee Maye and the Twins defeated Washington 2 1. Cesar Tovar and Ony Oliva supplied run production while Ron Perranoski finished for Minnesota. In other action, Orioles and Yankees won big on the same night.

Nick Carter to be honored at Santa Barbara testimonial dinner

UCSB retiree Nick Carter, after 34 years as coach and teacher, is feted at a June 30 dinner at El Paseo Restaurant. Tickets cost 10 dollars from Otts, All-American Sporting Goods, UCSB ticket office, or Gaucho Track and Field Club members. The event honors his career, with former teammates and Gaucho athletes among the guests. Carter, a 1928 Olympian, has held multiple coaching and officiating roles and helped found the Easter Relays and Gaucho Track and Field Club.
