Wholesale prices of fresh meats vegetables and farm products climbed 2.6 percent in May after two months of decline. Unemployment stayed near 6 percent for the 19th straight month while the consumer food price index rose 1.3 percent in May.

President Nixon held an extensive White House briefing with sixteen senators and fourteen House members to push bipartisan backing for the Moscow summit arms treaties. He urged fullest national scrutiny, said ABM treaty would go to the Senate, and that an offensive arms limit pact would be sent to both houses. Senator Henry M. Jackson argued the accords leave the U S in an inferior defense position.

The Lompoc Water Commission postponed its special meeting due to only two other commissioners in attendance. A three member committee approved a budget study letter urging Council to adopt a supplemental water plan for 1978 to 1988 and support the Diablo Canyon Desalting Project while awaiting Hansen's signature to show full commission backing.
Rep. Wilbur Mills warns the $1,000-a-citizen plan would leave a large deficit even with Social Security eliminated. He questions where the funds would come from and notes the need for a balanced program. He also offered himself as a possible compromise candidate if nominating contenders falter.
