Baccalaureate services honor Cabrillo and Lompoc graduates

Hundreds of parents and friends attended baccalaureate at Lompoc and Cabrillo High Schools in the Valley. Reverends Timberlake Turner Daniel Phillips and local choirs and bands led prayers, hymns, and musical pieces including Bach and Mendelssohn. Informal teas followed the services.

Dalat bombardment by Viet Cong and North Vietnamese

Communist forces shelled three Allied installations at Dalat and struck a nearby hamlet during a weekend attack. Rockets hit a U.S. artillery camp, a South Vietnamese militia center, and Lien Khuong air field while guerrillas moved into Tay Ho hamlet and briefly occupied a college, seminary, and church downtown. Casualties were light with 47 guerrilla and 16 South Vietnamese dead reported.

TV crews vanish near Phnom Penh as war rages

NBC and CBS crews totaling eight men are missing after abandoned cars were found 33 miles south of Phnom Penh on Highway 3. Cambodian soldiers faced Communist fire while attempting to recover the cars and disappeared. The teams include American, Japanese, French and other nationals with multiple correspondents stationed in Tokyo Hong Kong Rome and Phnom Penh. The tally of missing reporters reaches twenty with several earlier captures and releases.

Cambodian checkpoint incident delays NBC CBS crew

Cambodian Army reports NBC and CBS crews faced warnings at kilometer 50 on Highway 3 Sunday morning. Syvertsen and Miller drove a canvas jeep while others rode in a blue Mercedes. After warnings, the NBC team allegedly passed the checkpoint in a green Opel, later found abandoned miles ahead on the road.

Voter Turnout Seen At 60 Percent In June Primary

The county clerk estimates about 60 percent of 104 600 registered voters will cast ballots in the June 2 primary, well below 1968 turnout. Only 1 800 absentee ballots have been requested, though 4 000 were ordered. Electronic vote counters are set in Santa Barbara Lompoc and Santa Maria areas with 1 064 election workers at 265 polling places.

Bus Strike Shuts AC Transit in Oakland Bay Area Tieups

A strike by 1,100 AC Transit drivers and 330 mechanics and clerical workers halted services at midnight. The walkout snarled Bay Bridge approaches with 10 mile backups on the MacArthur Freeway, delaying 200,000 daily riders including 21,500 commuters to San Francisco and 27,000 school children. The congestion lingered and drive times stretched from 30 minutes to 90 minutes.
