Nixon predicts close hard fought campaign in 1972 race
President Nixon said the 1972 election will be close and hard fought down to the wire despite Democratic disarray over Eagleton. He recalled his 1952 Checkers moment and urged campaigning on issues rather than personalities while McGovern's ticket faces scrutiny. In California, notaries public would see a fee hike from 1 to 2 dollars under a bill passed by the Assembly.

Supreme Court to hear appeal on Pentagon Papers wiretap details
Justice William O Douglas agreed to hear defense bid to force disclosure of federal wiretap details in the Elisberg Russo Pentagon Papers case. The request follows a prior appeals defeat and delays in the trial over theft conspiracy and espionage tied to the Vietnam study. The hearing is set for 7:30 p.m. EDT in Yakima Washington after Douglas met at a Pasadena conference. The government argues the wiretap was legally authorized and unrelated to the defense.
