Viking spacecraft in Mars orbit since June 19 releases Lander for a 3-5 hour descent. Lander enters atmosphere at 10,000 mph, sheds heat shield, retrorockets fire, and instruments begin atmospheric monitoring. Lander lands and the life-detection laboratory starts operations.
A space agency report says Viking I completed a flawless Mars landing early today after a two week site search. Cameras selected a favorable spot delaying the July 4 schedule. Transmission from the rear surface calls the photography fantastic.
