Rail unions plan additional nationwide pickets and strikes

The United Transportation Union with 180000 members plans to strike at least two railroads Friday over work rules, targeting Union Pacific and Southern Railway and possibly Chicago & North Western. AT&T telephone workers started a second day of a 500000 strong strike, with no talks scheduled, amid broader labor disruptions in copper, shipping, telegraph, and farm equipment sectors. U S proposes cease fire at Paris Vietnam talks

In Paris the United States offered a new approach to restart the Indochina peace conference by seeking a cease-fire throughout Indochina including Laos and Cambodia. David K E Bruce reported the Communists offered no constructive response and urged a restricted meeting to discuss their seven point plan.

Ellsberg case under advisement in Boston

A federal magistrate deferred ruling on Dr Daniel Ellsberg’s bid to dismiss a government motion to transport him to California for trial on Pentagon papers leaks. Magistrate Peter W. Princi said he needed more time to review Ellsberg’s claim that evidence was obtained via illegal electronic eavesdropping and postponed the hearing to July 23 for rebuttal by the U S Attorney.

Wahlers rescinds library tax hike after county funds approved

City Administrator Gene Wahlers told the council new county library funds allow dropping the proposed 8 cent hike to 7 cents and eliminating part of the library tax increase. The plan would raise the general fund by 44 thousand and adjust rates for parks, retirement, electric utility, and waste disposal.

Connally outlines strong but uneven economic comeback

Treasury Secretary John B. Connally, Nixon’s chief economic spokesman, said the economy is rebounding from the recession with a broad, deep expansion though some soft spots remain. He warned of mixed bad and good news in coming months and kept to forecasts of unemployment down to about 4.5 percent by mid next year. He suggested inflation may stabilize this year, noting current rates around 3 percent rather than the May 7.2 percent peak.
