Mistaken order may have caused Alaskan pipeline explosion
The explosion at a pump station along the Alyeska pipeline may have been caused by a mistaken command to restart a pump under repair. Alyeska spokesman Larry Carpenter cited human error and said the pump could only be activated at the station near mile 799. Investigators noted the valve gushed oil into a hot turbine, sparking the blast that killed one and injured five. Oil flow may resume within days, though some expect weeks.
