TV may ban cigarette ads in 1973
NAB Television Code Review Board recommends eliminating all cigarette ads from TV by September 1 1973 and banning ads in or near youth directed programs. A subcommittee would study ways to curb appeal to youth while NAB boards must approve the plan before effect. The phaseout targets total elimination by Sept. 1 1973. Dallas state Rep James H Clark says he will not seek reelection and criticizes the special session.

County budgets survive trimming in Sheriff and jail plans
The Board of Supervisors approved Sheriff Coroner and county detention budgets totaling about 3.96 million dollars with only modest reductions. Sheriff Webster argued for a 585 thousand dollar increase to match rising crime and the new Goleta jail. The sheriff coroner budget stays at 2.24 million. detention facilities rise by over 500 thousand to cover staff and equipment for the planned multi million dollar jail opening next spring. The panel also raised welfare revenues and debated a 10 cent levy to fund capital outlays, while considering tax relief measures and possible transfers to balance the next year’s finances.

Theft at Lompoc garage and Toyota Motors reports
The Lompoc police reported a theft of camping gear worth about 100 from a garage at 227 S E Street. Victim is Harry f Lamperson. Items include an outboard motor drill camping stove and tackle box. Also stolen last night from Toyota Motors at 203 E Ocean Ave were two tire changer pieces valued at 150. A separate contract worth 68845 was awarded to Burke Construction Company for repair of the Point Sul Exit Road on base.
