Chief Justice conflicts over expanding Supreme Court
Chief Justice Warren E. Burger rejected expanding the Supreme Court from nine members in his State of the Judiciary address to the American Bar Association. He urged measures to ease caseloads, including a larger staff, eliminating juries in civil cases, and using a single lawyer for criminal cases from trial to appeal.

Subsidies for crops fall to about 2.7 billion this year
The Agriculture Department says federal subsidies for cotton wheat and feed grain drop to about 2.7 billion dollars in 1971 down from 3.3 billion last year. A new law caps payments at 55000 per crop or 165000 total per farmer across three categories and some growers like John Wayne and Senator Eastland reportedly shielded holdings by leasing land to tenants.

Hoffa to Receive 75000 Year Pension and Emeritus Title
Union sources say Jimmy Hoffa, imprisoned former Teamsters leader, would receive a $75,000 annual pension and be named president emeritus. Some reports claim Hoffa seeks a $1 million lump settlement instead. Hoffa resigned last month to aid parole chances from Lewisburg prison where he serves 13 years for mail fraud and jury tampering. Frank E. Fitzsimmons, Hoffa’s successor, may receive a raise to $125,000 while Secretary-Treasurer Thomas Flynn could go to $100,000. Meantime Leonard Woodcock urges Hoffa parole and cites UAW money troubles from the GM strike, debt, and dues suspensions with ALA relations and Detroit convention notes.
