Sheriff warns against shifting work furlough to Probation

Sheriff John W. Carpenter told the Board of Supervisors that the work furlough program he has run for over three years should not be handed to the Probation Department. He warned of higher costs, unsuitable participants, and potential embarrassment, citing a June 27 meeting he was not invited to. He argued that moving control could increase crime and undermine judicial supervision, urging deferral until the economy improves.

Bicycle licenses studied by county officials

County budget sessions spurred talk of bike license fees as a potential funding source for bikeway construction. Supervisor Robert E Kellman voiced the idea, with aide James Rickard gathering data to place the measure on the agenda. State revenue declines and high costs of off road paths drive the push for supplemental funds. Bikers worry delays will mean aging before safe routes exist.
