Laird warns withdrawal cost will run into billions this year

Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird said pulling all U.S. troops and equipment from Vietnam this year would be possible but would cost billions. Park Staff Renovate La Purisima Visitors Center

Two staff members from the State Parks and Recreation Department in Sacramento are completing a face lift of the Visitors and Information Center at La Purisima Mission. A tow truck is being towed by a car on H Street this morning. The forecast calls for a fair period through Saturday with low clouds and patchy fog this morning, clearing to patchy conditions tonight and Saturday morning. Saturday will be slightly warmer with highs in the 60s to near 80 and overnight lows in the 50s. Northwest winds 12 to 25 mph in the afternoons. Saturday tides include high tides of 3 feet at 8 38 am and 5 4 feet at 7 14 pm, and low tides of 0 8 feet at 1 14 am and 2 5 feet at 12 20 pm.

Retail sales dip in Lompoc in early 1971 report

State Board of Equalization data show Lompoc retail sales for the first quarter of 1971 at 8.077 million, down from 9.377 million in late 1970, and below the 1970 first quarter. County and state totals rise overall with Santa Barbara County up by about 114 million from the prior quarter.
