Exotic animals including bears lions a chimpanzee elephant and a vulture have been kept on agriculturally zoned land around Buellton Santa Barbara County in violation of zoning rules. The Derby and Evans holdings house 60 to 100 animals while evictions and bankruptcies reshaped ownership and locations amid no conditional use permits. The animals have been moved, split up or relocated with plans to further relocate to a mountain site after court action and dissolving business ties.

Expensive oil widens U.S. trade deficit in 1974
The Commerce Department reports a $3.065 billion annual U.S. trade deficit in 1974 driven by a sharp rise in oil costs.
