Assessor to Keep Lompoc Office Amid Board Recommendation

County Assessor William H. Cook will maintain the Lompoc assessor’s office and services despite a state recommendation to move most functions to Santa Maria. The California State Board of Equalization urged relocating real property records to Santa Maria to improve control and reduce errors. Cook will retain Lompoc operations, continue bi monthly public access, and address deficiencies, including a sales ratio program in use since October 1973. He noted planned reassessment increases for Grefco Johns Manville mining properties and projected about a 20 percent rise in Lompoc city property values over the 1960s levels, with about a 2 percent annual rise as a result. The board praised Cook’s handling of the extensive task and cited ongoing corrections in petroleum and mineral property appraisals.
