FDA to remove brominated vegetable oils from safe list

The FDA plans to remove brominated vegetable oils from generally recognized as safe. New commissioner Charles C. Edwards said the agency will yank suspect products without full scientific evaluation. Canada has imposed stricter limits while U S levels may reach 150 parts per million in soft drinks. Edwards pledged decisive action based on doubt to protect public health.

Airlines may be suspended for charter flight violations

The Civil Aeronautics Board urged suspending licenses of Capitol Overseas National Atlantis Caledonian for selling cut rate charter trips to the general public. World Airways faces charges but no suspension. Violations cover about 50 trips and an estimated 75,000 passengers in 1968 and 1969 with penalties up to 1000 dollars per illegal flight.

Smith chosen as new Mormon church leader

Joseph Fielding Smith, a 93 year old noted theologian and church historian, was chosen by the Mormon Council of the Twelve Apostles to become the 10th president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to succeed the late David O. McKay. Harold B. Lee was named to head the council.

Grand jury to probe Yablonski killings in Ohio and Pa

A federal grand jury will open in Cleveland to probe the killing of UMW official Joseph A. Yablonski his wife and daughter. Three men Claude Vealey Aubran Martin and Paul Gilly face murder charges as divers search the Monongahela River for clues amid extradition fights and ongoing investigations from Pennsylvania to Ohio.

Hospital board reaffirms policy at Lompoc facility

The Lompoc District Hospital board reaffirmed the hospital management policy adopted a year ago and reviewed periodically. A three member committee was formed to advise on investing employee pension funds. Ken Wicks reported Dr. William Maycock joined the active medical staff and a National Joint Commission survey is planned for February 12.

Davis recounts police suggestion to dynamite amphitheatre during Chicago Seven trial

Rennie Davis testified that an undercover police agent named Irwin Bock showed a balloon gadget and suggested using it to drop an explosive on the International Amphitheatre, a claim defense lawyers called credible. Davis said he warned colleagues Bock might be a police agent and pressed that the group planned peaceful demonstrations at the convention.

City shuttering bandstand use with new permit rule

Daily record reports Lompoc Parks and Recreation requires special applications for bands to use Ryan Park bandstand to curb noise. No closure planned. practice groups must obtain permission from the Recreation Department at 105 South C Street. Also noted are a car wash theft, a minor injury in a North H Street crash, and a separate Ocean Avenue crash injuring John Ingle.

Mrs. Howard Alice Hutton dies in Medford Oregon after a long residence in Lompoc. She lived with her daughter Mrs. Lee Glosser in Medford. Funeral services set for Wednesday at Pierce Mortuary in North Hollywood.

Paris teen dies after setting self on fire

A 17 year old girl, Caroline Shutz, set fire to herself and jumped from a fourth floor window of a private Paris school near the River Seine. Police transported her to a hospital where she died. This followed other self immolation cases noted in France that week.

PATCO vote looms after FAA transfer controversy

Controllers union PATCO plans a possible walkout vote at its Sunday session over FAA transfers. The dispute centers on 100 percent transfer of Baton Rouge members and could affect major airports nationwide. Mary Washington, 13, found alive at Schofield Barracks after 53 days missing with severe malnutrition. She is hospitalized and unable to be questioned about her whereabouts.
