Gilmore Executed by Firing Squad at Utah Prison

Gary Gilmore was executed by a five man firing squad at Utah State Prison after a stay was lifted. The 36 year old killer admitted to slayings during a motel robbery in Provo and a gas station robbery. Gilmore’s body was donated to medicine and cremation planned after a Provo funeral.

Sorensen withdraws CIA nomination announced in Senate

Theodore Sorensen told the Senate he asked Jimmy Carter to withdraw his nomination to lead the CIA. He said the decision came two minutes before the confirmation hearing. Sorensen telephoned Carter from Plains Georgia to report the withdrawal and defended his record before the Intelligence Committee.

Lompoc to hear animal control ordinance and related issues

The Lompoc City Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday at 7 30 p m on an animal control ordinance that would limit pets to those normal to a household and ban many farm and wild animals. Other measures include limits on dogs, prohibition of bees near residences, and exceptions for zoos or educational use.

Ford unveils 440 billion budget sparking Democratic backlash

President Ford proposed a 440 billion fiscal 1978 budget with a 7 percent defense rise and cuts to social programs. Democrats led by House Speaker O'Neill and senators Muskie and Giaimo criticized the plan as unworkable and unrealistic while noting the expense shifts toward defense energy health and welfare.

Fillmore students embark for Carter inauguration trip

Thirty-one Fillmore School sixth graders with 11 chaperones travel by bus to Washington D C for the presidential inauguration. The group left Lompoc, stayed with Quander Road School hosts in Alexandria, and planned to arrive Tuesday night. Funds total about $7,350 from the school board and public donations with additional traveler’s checks carried by organizer Bill Yates.

Freighter Slices Navy Launch Killing 23 Near Barcelona

A Spanish freighter struck a U.S. Navy launch carrying about 120 sailors and Marines returning from shore leave near Barcelona. At least 23 dead, 95 survivors, 18 hospitalized, with many missing and dive teams searching the harbor. Survivors recalled the moment of impact as the boats sank rapidly.
