Despite recession and inflation, Lompoc retail spending rose 11 percent in the July–September 1974 period from a year earlier, with statewide sales up 14.9 percent. George R. Reilly of the Board of Equalization notes high sales amid rising prices and mentions tax and savings context.
Vandenberg Air Force Base prepares for a Wednesday launch of the Delta vehicle carrying NASA’s LANDSAT II in a bid to extend the ERTS program. The mission will orbit at about 570 miles and transmit seven radiation channels to Goddard for processing into color-coded regional images. The project involves U.S. states, South American nations, and international researchers studying crops, water resources, mineral deposits, estuary sediment, and aerosol content linked to ozone concerns.
Sen. Henry M. Jackson denounced President Ford energy proposals as inflationary and ruinous and announced a floor fight to block them. He would strip tariff authority on imported oil and decontrol prices, push his own program with Sunday gasoline closings, import limits, and possible rationing authority. Ford plans $1 to $3 per barrel tariffs by spring, Jackson warns of $800 yearly cost to the average family.
Clemencia Garcia Loaiza a 26 year old of 206 West Ocean Avenue was listed in fair condition in Marian Hospital ICU after falling from a car on Miguelito Canyon Road near Johns Manville following a quarrel with her boyfriend over marriage. She suffered facial lacerations and a fractured right wrist. Police say she was despondent.
A low-cost anti-rabies inoculation clinic will be held tomorrow from 1 to 4 p.m. at two locations in Lompoc. Dogs at Veterans Memorial Building and cats at Pioneer Park. Rabies shots cost 2.50 with licenses available at the same time.
Jim Lynch, formerly of Lompoc and now with NASA in Maryland, returns to the area to visit old friends as he awaits the ERTS satellite launch. A foggy night gave way to a clear sunrise.
Johns-Manville Products Co will announce tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the J-M Club on Chestnut Avenue regarding the labor dispute that idled 500 workers. Federal mediator Frank Allen has knowledge of the plan as officials seek union participation or absence. Local 146 of the International Chemical Workers Union has been at odds since October 24 when the contract expired and production has run on a skeleton crew since December 9.
President Ford will tour across the country late this month to promote his economic energy recovery program. A spokesman said the campaign will begin toward the end of January with no dates set. Ford also meets energy advisers on creating a new energy research agency and aims for energy self sufficiency by 1985.
