Britain delivers first relief to Nigeria after civil war ends

Britain begins mercy shipments to Lagos totaling at least 76 tons by early next week with 11 tons of medicines and small trucks. Four more flights of similar tonnage planned, while the Red Cross coordinates 21 tons of medicine for Lagos on Monday and Tuesday. Agnew rests in Hawaii after Asia tour

Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, back in the United States after a 21 day tour of 11 Asian nations, arrived at Hickam Air Force Base Hawaii greeted by a crowd of military families. He planned a quiet weekend with wife Judy before returning to Washington. He hoped to golf Sunday but had no set plans. He will meet Adm. John S McCain Jr. Sunday morning and then resume duties Monday. The welcome included carnations and a Hawaiian serenade with no antiwar protests observed.

Author Freeman to visit Fillmore School Wednesday

San Diego born author and illustrator Don Freeman will visit Fillmore School on January 21 for two student assemblies and library talks. He studied in New York City and has illustrated Broadway impressions for major papers. He writes and illustrates his own and others books with titles like Come Again Pelican and Fly High Fly Low. A noon potluck lunch hosts the speaker with library staff and PTA members.

Air Force grounds new planes over wing weaknesses

The Air Force grounded the F111 fighter and C5A Galaxy after wing cracks and other structural weaknesses were found. The C5A third operational model at Lockheed Marietta had an 8 to 10 inch wing crack discovered during retrofit, with 84 flights and 297 hours logged. Grounding affects 10 planes, pending inspections and reinforcement measures. The F111s had a wing failure at Nellis Air Force Base last month that killed two pilots. The C5A is the largest aircraft, capable of carrying 220000 pounds and 375 troops, and measures about 245 feet long.

Water contamination on typhoid ship Oronsay linked to waste

In Vancouver and San Francisco the Oronsay typhoid outbreak prompts health officials to report water supply contaminated with human waste possibly from a pipe leak. At least 37 aboard hospitalized, five confirmed cases and one suspected among crew. More suspected cases treated in Vancouver, route included stops at San Pedro and San Francisco.
