Library student flunks practical test over stolen books

Long Beach. Donald David Lee, 22, of Cypress, was arrested on a charge of stealing 22 volumes from the Beckhart Collection at Long Beach State College. He claimed he took the books over a year to fund grad school. A dealer in Los Angeles exposed the theft, and police recovered the undamaged volumes at his aunt’s home in San Gabriel.

Old Line Quarter Horse Assoc Names Inspector

Tom McDonald appointed inspector for Santa Barbara County and head of the association's first regional office. He will inspect unregistered mares for conformational standards, with a 14 hands height requirement and breed exclusions. Fees include twenty dollars for inspection and membership. McDonald operates LaSalle Canyon Stables and serves Lompoc and Santa Ynez Valleys.

County weighs more agricultural preserves amid deadline pressure

The County Planning Commission approved six preservation applications totaling 9190 acres while some members voiced discontent. Richard M. Clare and Michael J. Henry opposed all six. others favored rezoning and preserve status for properties near Santa Maria, Los Alamos, and Santa Ynez.
