Calley seeks his freedom in bail bid

Free meals offered to seniors at Bethany Lutheran Church

Lompoc residents aged 60 and over can receive one free hot meal daily at Bethany Lutheran Church on South E Street. Nutrition for Seniors, run by Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara County, plans to expand beyond Morro Bay with federal funding supporting 350 meals weekly. Meals are served Monday through Friday at noon with donations accepted to broaden the program.

A United Airlines flight from San Francisco to New York diverted to Milwaukee after passenger Robert Slutsky 31 of Far Rockaway New York went berserk at 33 000 feet slashing at travelers with a blunt knife Two men were lightly cut and one a stunt man Kenneth Stern 24 Eatontown New Jersey and Ray Stevens 46 New York knocked him out Stevens reported being bitten Slutsky faces federal charges for crime aboard an aircraft assault with a deadly weapon The pilot landed the jet following the incident believed to have erupted during a movie screening.

Probation ban bill for criminals killed by Assembly panel

A Senate measure to bar judges from granting probation to heroin peddlers and gun criminals failed in the Assembly Criminal Justice Committee. After the vote, California Peace Officers announced a nearby ballot initiative. Attorney General Younger and law enforcement argued against probation for heroin pushers and violent gun offenders. Coleman Blease of the ACLU opposed the bill.

FBI says Hearst location unknown amid kidnapping standoff

FBI top investigator Bates told reporters after a Hearst family meeting that agents do not know where Patricia Hearst is being held and will not act to locate her. Governor Reagan urged Californians not to aid ransom demands. The SLA has not broken off negotiations, Bates said.

Gold prices may rise further on European markets
