Obscenity standards argued before Supreme Court
Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and the American Library Association urge the high court to keep local norms from deciding obscenity. The ALA argues prurient appeal, offensiveness, and lack of serious value depend on the viewer, echoing Flynt in a federal Iowa case. Flynt, convicted in Cincinnati, appeals while free on bail. The ALA says criminal prosecutions should wait for civil determinations of obscenity.
