Sandstorm Rips Southern California Highways

Strong winds toppling sandstorms strike the Mojave Desert with gusts to 72 mph. I-40 I-15 and US 395 close to campers while I-10 and I-5 suspend heavy traffic. Freeways reopen for passengers as hospitals report injuries and motorists stranded across the region. The NWS expects winds to ease to 35-50 mph with diminishing gusts tonight.

Planners Move Public Hearing to City Hall Auditorium

City planners set a public hearing on proposed zoning amendments to abate nuisances on private property. Vietnamese forces backed by the United States report their Laos advance remains on track with limited visible progress. A spokesman notes the aim is to locate and destroy enemy materiel while methodically clearing and securing the 12 by 16 mile area already occupied.

Excon confesses murder of three Texas deputies

Rene Adolfo Guzman and Leonardo Ramos Lopez admitted shooting to death three deputy sheriffs near the Trinity River in Dallas five days earlier. The suspects were captured after a police raid on a Dallas flat guided by a helicopter spotlight. The victims were Dallas County Deputies Samuel Garcia Infante and William Don Reese and Ellis County Deputy A J Robertson.

Calley described as feeling fear and hostility before My Lai

Lt. William L. Calley testified he felt fear, hatred, hostility and frustration during his Vietnam service before the My Lai sweep. Defense witness Dr. Wilbur Hamman said Calley discussed his emotions from ship departure to March 17, 1968, after leading a search and destroy mission that killed 102 civilians.
