Four men held after break in California cattle rustling ring
Sheriff's officials report a bust of a cattle rustling ring with the arrest of three Lompoc area men and another from Santa Maria. All face five counts of grand theft bovine and Russell Keith Rankin is jailed for slaughter of cattle or sheep. Three men were arrested in the Lompoc Valley area and another in Santa Maria. The four are charged with slaughtering cattle on the Pete Valla Ranch near Mission Hills and nearby Cojo Ranch and a Santa Maria area property.

Army court upholds Calley’s 20 year term
An Army court affirmed the conviction and two year sentence of 1st Lt. William J. Calley Jr. for his role in the My Lai massacre.
