County officials pressed for full drilling halt before House hearing

Officials brace for more oil near Santa Barbara coast

The Santa Barbara harbor braces as onshore winds push a new eight mile oil slick toward the coast. Oil and gas continue seeping from the ocean floor near an offshore platform while 500 workers clean 30 miles of beaches blackened by 230000 gallons leaked over 12 days. Union Oil and experts call the seepage residual oil, not a fresh leak. Former Interior Secretary Udall says opening the Santa Barbara Channel to drilling was to address West Coast oil deficits. he cites 100000 more barrels used daily than produced.

Trio held on suspicion of burglaries in Lompoc

Three men Steven Edward Gregory James Andrew Ryals and Harold Edward Banks were jailed in Lompoc on suspicion of burglary after a wave of break ins across the city over 10 days. Bail set at 3125 each. Police did not disclose charges. The burglaries damaged seven businesses and several residences with cash and tools taken. Weather and tides noted for February 16 17 with gusty wind and showers.

Astro-Air to Begin Lompoc to Los Angeles Service

Astro-Air will begin operations Monday as Lompoc's first commuter airline to Los Angeles. A morning storm drops about .63 inches of rain in the Lompoc area turning fields to mud and flooding intersections. Cachuma Dam gates leak at 1400 cubic feet per second after rain began at 6 am with .46 inches by 8:30 am. The United States Britain and France in unison rejected a Soviet protest over West Germany’s plan to hold a presidential election in West Berlin next month.
