The Lompoc Valle y Chess Club and Cabrillo field strong squads in the 1974 Santa Barbara County High School Chess League opening round. Lompoc seniors Calvin Welsh Mike Skinner Terry Brecksmith lead varsity wins. Dunn School upset by five boards. Cabrillo tops Righetti 4 0 varsity and 3 1 JV as Ross Perry Keith Laband Robert Byrd and Ken Bosley win in varsity. Correspondence chess urged with Vaughn Proctor inviting postal moves. program aids shut ins and youth chess efforts.
