Apollo 14 returns to Earth after lunar samples haul

Apollo 14 astronauts Shepard Mitchell and Roosa sped toward Earth from 161 512 miles out as the moon mission neared a Pacific splashdown. They carried 109 pounds of moon rocks and soil from Fra Mauro Valley and broadcast a plea for world peace.

Weather outlook with coastal tides and temps

Fair through Tuesday with low clouds and fog at night and morning. Temperatures rise little with highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s and lows 35 to 45. Light wind. Tuesday tides include high of 5.9 feet at 9 08 a.m. and 4.2 feet at 10 26 p.m. Low tides reach 1.8 feet at 3 02 a.m. and minus 0.8 feet at 4 08 p.m.

South Vietnamese Move Into Laos Aims to Cut Communist Supply Lines

South Vietnamese forces with U.S. air support enter Laos to disrupt North Vietnamese supply routes. Six U.S. helicopters were shot down and two American crewmen killed as heavy ground fire hit the assault. Final search planned for two missing from sunken Rogue

Sheriff's divers aided by the Coast Guard prepared at noon to inspect the sunken fishing cruiser Rogue for two missing men after 20 aboard foundered off Vandenberg Saturday. Two bodies were recovered near Pt. Sal while sixteen survivors were treated for shock and hypothermia.

Arson Attacks Hit UCSB Campus Weekend

Molotov cocktails were thrown at the UCSB sheriff’s station on the Santa Barbara campus early Sunday as part of two arson attempts over the weekend. One suspect was arrested. other arrests were anticipated. Earlier, arsonists failed to ignite four Army trucks near the nearby armory and fires damaged an ROTC building at Perfect Park Isla Vista after an antiwar rally. At Stanford, a firebomb targeted the athletics building housing ROTC classrooms with moderate damage, while a blaze outside a Free Campus movement building was contained by students.

Nixon outlines broad program for environment policy

President Nixon presents an 18 page plan proposing tough air and water controls with charges on sulphur oxides and a gasoline lead tax. He seeks a $12 billion nationwide program to curb water pollution, stronger pesticide regulation, recycling incentives, toxic substance rules, noise limits, ocean dumping restrictions, expanded urban parks, and streamlined siting for power plants while advancing mining impact regulation.
