Judge invalidates Rozelle Rule as antitrust violation
UPI reports U.S. District Court Judge Earl Larson ruled the NFL Rozelle Rule violates federal antitrust laws. The decision bars continued use of the option compensation clause, deeming it per se illegal and a concerted restraint on trade. The case, brought by the NFL Players Association, argued the rule blocks free agency and salary arising from players finishing their option. The ruling stayed to allow an appeal, with no immediate statement from the NFL.
