1976 a year for tourist trade loss for ranchers
The Santa Ynez Valley saw a record tourist year in 1976 with Solvang thriving on visitors and new shops expanding, while agriculture suffered from unusual August rains and September deluge. Grapes, alfalfa, tomatoes, walnuts faced losses as crops were damaged, dumped or unsalvageable, striking a dual economic tale.
Autumn drought, harvests, and district issues in Santa Ynez Valley
A pattern of Indian Summer weather aided the Cabernet Sauvignon harvest while October and November rains brought total seasonal rainfall to 6.85 inches though drought grips the valley. 1976 highlights include wastewater treatment struggles of the Santa Ynez Community Services District, joint efforts with Solvang, and a pending March 1977 deadline for a joint powers agreement. New building activity rose, led by the 2.18 million high school expansion, with 14.87 million in valley permits for 11 months, and school bond plans in Los Olivos and Santa Ynez districts. The Santa Ynez Mission Band of Indians opened a 75,000 camping facility and a 135,000 community building. Growth versus no-growth debates over land use continued, with Bob Hedlund's supervisor-elect tenure shaping future decisions. The year ends with guarded optimism across farmers, ranchers, and the tourism-driven Solvang economy.

Yager to name planner on Monday in Santa Barbara county
County Supervisor elect David Yager of Montecito said he will announce the second planning commissioner from his First District by next Monday when he takes office. He has already appointed Joan Wells as one planner and hopes to name an administrative assistant soon. Wells, active in land use issues and Land Stanford graduate, shares Yager’s environmental concern and view on growth limits and property rights. Frost’s appointees will bow out January 3, as Yager will not reappoint Looker or White, who had Frost backing opponent Leo Martinez. Elections officers will be discussed at the Santa Ynez Improvement Association meeting tonight, including Calzada Avenue housing project plans.
