Defense chief nominee hints at cuts to military benefits
Defense Secretary-designate Harold Brown told the Los Angeles Times that military benefits and day to day Pentagon operations may be trimmed to reduce the defense budget. He said pay, allowances, commissary privileges, medical care and pension costs could be targeted, stressing no final conclusions and noting the need for balance between costs and service value. Brown also noted Carter’s pledge to cut $5 to $7 billion does not lock in an immediate reduction to Ford’s proposed outlay.
