Postal rate hike ruled illegal by Judge Sirica

Federal Judge John Sirica ruled that the planned December 28 first class letter rate increase was imposed illegally because the Postal Service did not file a proper request with the Postal Rate Commission. He said no valid request existed and temporary increases cannot be set until proper filings and statutory steps are completed. Postmaster General Bailor said the ruling would be appealed amid concerns over a $200 million monthly deficit.

Moore may face life sentence after guilty plea on Ford shooting

Sara Jane Moore admitted firing at President Gerald Ford after outlining her plan to the court. Judge Samuel Conti warned she could receive a lighter sentence if she informs probation about any others involved, with sentencing set for January 15 and a pre-sentencing report to be prepared. Moore described traveling, obtaining the weapon, and firing at Ford outside the St Francis Hotel. She has a history of mental health treatment and prior government informant activity.

Kennedy Gun Panel Sees Likely Single Weapon

A Virginia forensic expert testified that most Kennedy bullets likely came from the same weapon but noted unusual lead buildup in the barrel suggesting unreported firings between 1968 and last October. He said uncoated bullets could have wiped out striations, hindering identification. A court hearing on a possible second gun proceeds.
