Conquistador Classic opens with eight teams at Cabrillo High

The first annual tournament brings teams from Dos Pueblos San Marcos Proctor Hug Watsonville Carson City West Bakersfield and Pacific Grove to Cabrillo High in Lompoc for a packed opening day. Daily schedule features four games from 4 p.m. to 8:45 p.m with opening ceremonies at 7 p.m.

Patented Bulls rally past Bucks to halt Bucks streak

Chicago coach Dick Motta saw a late deficit as a challenge and the Bulls erased an 82-73 hole with 10 minutes left to play. Chicago won 97-94 at Milwaukee Arena, extending its win streak to six and snapping Milwaukee’s 10 game run. The victory left the Bulls within one game of first place.

Braves fall to Barons in Santa Maria tourney opener

Lompoc Braves were overwhelmed by Fountain Valley in the eighth annual Santa Maria Optimist Club Tournament at Hancock College losing 56 to 32. The Braves trailed after a slow start and failed to penetrate Fountain Valley’s 3-2 zone. Rick Fridrich led Lompoc with 10 points, while Fountain Valley cruised behind Dan Malone and Tim Hill who scored 26 combined.

Cedeno trial may last months experts claim

Dominican experts predict Cesar Cedeno will miss spring training with the Houston Astros and may stay entangled in court into 1974. The 22 year old is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the motel slaying of Altagracia de la Cruz.
