Naval Reserve plane crashes on Sitkin Island in Alaska
A four engine Naval Air Reserve plane crashes on Great Sitkin Island Alaska with 10 aboard. Rescue helicopters cannot reach the wreckage due to snow and winds. The crew includes Lt Cmdr David McKinney Monroe a 39 year old Northwest Orient Airlines pilot from Redmond Washington and several commercial aviators in naval reserve training. Most victims are from the Pacific Northwest and there is no sign of survivors yet. The aircraft was en route from Elmendorf Air Force Base to Adak to pick up sailors on Christmas leave.
