Ocean Avenue improvements meeting eyed by council

Ocean Avenue Improvement Committee will reconvene for a public meeting Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Lompoc City Hall to review alternative plans. Mayor Charlotte Benton and Councilman Joe Valencia announced the meeting as city-backed plans for medians lanes parking changes face state approval and merchant opposition.

13 Bodies Found in U S Navy Plane Crash in Canary Islands

Stevens and Green file for city election nomination

Incumbent City Councilman E C Stevens and Realtor Tom Green are the first two to take out nomination papers for three city council seats in the March 7 General Municipal Election. Councilwoman Elinor Lefkowitz plans to seek re election while Mayor Charlotte Benton has not said if she will run. Nomination papers may be filed until noon December 29 unless an incumbent withdraws, in which case the deadline extends to January 3.

The Lompoc district plans to authorize staff to solicit bids for equipment for an $813000 central kitchen to serve all schools. The project location is next to the administration offices on North A Street.

The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that employees may be forced into early retirement under pre act benefit plans, overturning a Fourth Circuit finding. Chief Justice Burger wrote that the 1967 Age Discrimination Act does not bar plans arranged in good faith before its passage.

A federal court rejects a broad burden on employers to justify pre existing plans as discriminatory. Justice Burger supports that subterfuge means evasion and Congress did not intend to require business purpose. Lompoc Plans Four Public Hearings Tonight

Lompoc Planning Commission will hold four public hearings including two home use permit requests for Margaret M. Howard at 30 N Seventh St and Charles R. Smith at 1129 N Gardenia St, a condition for Tradewinds Restaurant beer and wine service at 1509 W Ocean Ave, and a zone change by J R LaTourette of Santa Barbara for a 2.75 acre parcel between Walnut and Ocean Aves on Third St. Staff also recommends postponing a 19 acre parcel division into 76 residential lots between Central Barton Aves and North Second St and the Santa Ynez River.
