The Senate backed a plan to form a nationwide freight oriented rail system from seven bankrupt lines in 17 states plus DC. A House-Senate conference will hammer a compromise as 2 billion in loan guarantees and a 75 25 federal state cost split loom.

Grand jury to probe Kent State killings

The Justice Department will impanel a federal grand jury in Cleveland on December 18 to investigate the 1970 Kent State University killings by Ohio National Guardsmen. The action does not guarantee indictments, and the four students were unarmed during the campus protest amid the Cambodia invasion.

Pacific Coast Storm Brings Winds Snow Across Regions

United Press reports South winds up to 60 mph at Rawlins Wyoming as a Pacific storm spreads rain and snow from northern Utah into the Rockies. West winds to 45 mph in the north. Snow falls from Oregon coast to western Washington with advisories and warnings posted along California coasts and Northeast snow in Maine.

Mullin found guilty of second degree murder in priest slaying

Herbert W. Mullin, 26, was found guilty in Santa Clara County on second degree murder for the November 2, 1972 killing of Rev. Henri Tomei at St. Mary's Church Los Gatos after he withdrew an insanity plea. He faces sentencing December 21. He earlier was convicted in Santa Cruz County for ten murders and sentenced to life. Public Defender C Randal Schneider said Mullin aimed to settle the case quickly.

Nervous thieves trigger bungled art heist near Champs Elysees

Four masked thieves burst into the Art Media agency near the Champs Elysees and tried to demand a haul. A bandit shot a partner during the hold up, gunfire erupted in the lobby, and the group fled after dragging a wounded companion into an old elevator.

CBS studio intruders arrested during live New York broadcast

A man posing as a journalism student entered the CBS Evening News studio in New York and flashed a sign protesting CBS Prejudice during a live segment. He and a companion, both Philadelphia residents linked to the Gay Raiders, were arrested for criminal trespassing after security restrained them.

Fire claims six aboard USS Kitty Hawk near Philippines

Aboard the carrier USS Kitty Hawk the fire in the main machinery room killed six crewmen and injured 38 while the ship, 700 miles east of the Philippines en route to Vietnam, returned to Subic Bay. The Navy reports four with minor burns and 34 with smoke inhalation. Names of the dead withheld.
