Coastline preservation plan unveiled by California panel
The Coastal Zone Conservation Commission released a 443 page plan to protect 1072 miles of coast by restricting development and guiding new projects to developed areas. It calls for $180 million in coastal acquisitions funded by a statewide bond, higher motorboat and hotel taxes, offshore oil revenues, and expanded regulatory zones up to five miles from the shore. The plan aims to balance public access and environmental protection, with potential for nuclear and offshore oil under strict conditions. It would push development away from open lands and toward existing areas, while allowing local input but preserving state oversight.
