Local youngsters to compete in Lompoc chess tourney
The Lompoc Valley Chess Club and Foundation host a no entry fee late summer tournament for Valley school students, with prizes including a one year US Chess Federation membership, Chess Life Review, two trophies, and a wood chess set. Rounds run Saturday and Sunday at the Community Building 217 W Maple Ave with times announced after prior rounds.

JOE LOUIS VILLALOBOS of Lompoc enlisted in the United States Army and will undergo eight weeks of basic training before advanced training. DENNIS DEAN GRIMES, also from Lompoc, joins the Army for three years with guaranteed automotive maintenance training. Norman L. Lane of Lompoc graduated from Naval Submarine School after two months of submarine operations training. William E. Pellerin of Lompoc earned his silver wings at Williams AFB and will join Griffiss AFB to fly KC-135s. Lt Pellerin, 1966 Lompoc High School grad, earned a BA in 1970 from San Jose State College and married Rae Pearsall of Pasadena.
