Six die in apparent escape attempt at San Quentin

UPI reports six people died after an aborted jailbreak at San Quentin when convict George Jackson drew a pistol on guards. Authorities were seeking to question Stephen Mitchell Bingham, a 29 year old Oakland lawyer linked to a prominent Connecticut family, identified as the last visitor to Jackson minutes before the escape bid. Three guards and two other convicts perished along with Jackson during the 15 minute incident.

Police halt raid by Manson family in Hawthorne gun battle

Five members of the Manson Family were arrested after a weekend raid on a Hawthorne gun shop ended in a firefight. Three suspects wounded. 100-plus rounds fired. Kenneth Comp and Dennis Rice also arrested. Charles Lovett fled. Officers recovered 40 guns from the panel truck and $634 stolen cash.
