The County Task Force039s critical review of the Federal draft Environmental Impact Report on oil and gas development in the Santa Barbara Channel won backing from the Board of Supervisors. The group urged more data from USGS and Interior, citing air quality, tanker traffic, seismic, onshore, and deep water drilling hazards, and urged hearings continue until raw data are provided.

Social services face more cuts amid funding uncertainty
County Welfare Director Arthur Nelson warned the Board of Supervisors that federal funding reductions could trigger further cuts in social services planned to start October 1. He assured essential services for the aged blind disabled and dependent children would remain level. Nelson cited 26 department positions cut and a 10 cent Homemaker hour reduction affecting about 550 recipients due to a 10% rate hike from the Community Action Commission. Separately the Lompoc Beautification Commission urged the city to authorize planting flowers in downtown planters as spring renewal delays downtown revitalization plans.
