Pollution risk noted in outer shelf oil lease sale
The final environmental impact statement by the Bureau of Land Management acknowledges pollution risk in the sale of 1.6 million acres of oil and gas leases off southern California. Viking mission shifts toward Mars by 1976 deadline
Engineers at Kennedy Space Center plan to launch the twin Viking spacecraft on Aug 20 to reach Mars before the 1976 bicentennial. A July 4 landfall is possible if timing holds, though a November 15 communications blackout looms. The first voyage was delayed by a drained battery and valve fault, prompting the swap with the second craft. Casper Weinberger joins Bechtel as vice president and director of its three main units after leaving HEW.
