Shuttle Enterprise completes maiden solo flight and landing

Edwards Air Force Base reports the space shuttle Enterprise completed its first solo flight and landing with a 5 minute 23 second run, after a staged piggyback ascent aboard a Boeing 747. Officials say this success can trim future free flight tests and accelerate the shuttle program toward the first orbital flight planned for March 1979 from Kennedy Space Center.

California restores capital punishment after veto override

California legislators override Gov. Brown on SB155, voting 54 to 26 to reinstate the death penalty. The new law allows immediate penalties for treason and 15 murders, but bars execution for those under 18, aligning with court guidelines. Assemblyman Kapiloff condemned the override as sanctioning the cheapening of life.

Vance presses Rhodesia peace effort with British allies

Carter seeks wide support for Panama Canal treaty

President Carter has contacted Gerald Ford and Henry Kissinger as part of a broad effort to persuade the public to back a Panama Canal treaty. Carter plans to endorse later today the agreements in principle reached by U S ambassadors Ellsworth Bunker and Sol Linowitz with Panamanian negotiators. Powell said Carter spoke by phone to Ford and Kissinger from Plains Georgia and to many others while Congress members have shown cautious openness.

Senate expected to approve gas guzzler tax says Schlesinger

Energy Secretary James Schlesinger said the Senate will likely move toward the administration’s gas guzzler tax plan despite auto-industry opposition. He warned the fight would be uphill and noted industry claims of 23,000 layoffs by 1985 are self serving. The House already approved a weaker version and Senate hearings continued on the broader energy package.

Undetermined blaze gutts Orcutt restaurant known as Alexander's Harvest

A fire at Alexander's Harvest Restaurant in Orcutt destroyed the rustic building at 4850 S Bradley Rd. and caused 125000 in damage plus 25000 in smoke and water loss to nearby structures. Three firefighters were injured with non life threatening burns. Responders from Santa Maria Sisquoc Los Alamos and Lompoc Valley plus Santa Maria city and Orcutt Volunteers fought the blaze. Witnesses reported 352 p m call from Union Service Station and speculation cited an electrical breaker box.
