Last U.S. combat unit deactivated in Vietnam
The Army deactivated the last U.S. ground combat unit in Vietnam, the 3rd Battalion of the 21st Infantry, at Da Nang. The unit, with 1,043 men, suffered a booby trap wound on its final patrol. Most personnel will return home in days while some with critical skills or short Vietnam service remain. The tally of Americans still in country stood at 44,600 last week.
