East German tunnel escape under the Berlin Wall

Two engineers from East Germany and seven family members tunneled beneath the Berlin Wall on July 27 and emerged through a drainage pipe in West Berlin. Nine refugees crawled to freedom, the first successful escape since February 1972, as West German officials pledged crackdown on refugee smugglers while promising nonrefoulement.

Tornadoes Raze Several States as Severe Storms Sweep Midwest

A tornado ripped through Carson City Michigan damaging buildings and house trailers injuring several people, none seriously. Additional twisters reported near Genoa Wisconsin and Leach Lake Minnesota. Hail the size of golf balls and 80 mph winds struck Lovewell Dam Kansas with no injuries. Heavy rains fell in midwestern cities while cooler air settled across the north plains and mild weather continued in the west. Morning temps ranged from 49 at Evanston Wyoming to 94 at Needles California.

County board to hear proposed 1973 74 tax rate figure

County Auditor Pauly Floyd said he will present to the Board of Supervisors on Monday a maximum tax rate for the 1973 74 fiscal year. He emphasized the figure is not a recommended rate and that the official levy will be adopted on August 27 under Senate Bill 90.
